Countdown to Christmas - 12 days to go!

Darkroom Door - Monday, December 14, 2009

Last week I shared this card created with a Yuletide Vol 1 wordstrip, Yuletide Montage image and the Star Background stamp:

Yuletide_Day5

I mentioned how it would look cool to reverse it and have the redYuletide Vol 2 Wordstrip on a white or cream card. Well... here's a card to show how that looks:

Candle

Supplies:
Darkroom Door Yuletide Vol 2 Wordstrip
Darkroom Door Yuletide Vol 1 Filmstrip
Darkroom Door Yuletide Vol 2 stamp set (Pine leaf)

Instructions:
  1. Stamp the pine leaf repeatedly over the cream card using Olive green inkpad.
  2. Adhere Yuletide Vol 2 Wordstrip down the full length of the card. Trim off excess.
  3. Trim images from Yuletide Vol 1 Filmstrip into individual images. Adhere one image to the right side of the Wordstrip as shown.

Such a simple design, but it can be used in so many different ways! It would look great with the other collections too...

Hope you're all enjoying the festive season!

Darkroom Door - Thursday, December 10, 2009

Ohhhh, who's getting excited about Christmas? I've almost finished all my presents, I just have a few more to make this weekend and a few fun things to buy for our stockings and I'm all set!

Today I'm showing you a card I created a while back when I first started playing around with the Yuletide Vol 2 stamp set:

Ornaments_1

This is another really easy card to create. Simply stamp the quote first in Olive green ink. Then stamp the Ornaments around it. There are only two ornaments in the stamp set, but I just repeated them to cover the entire card. If you wanted to add something extra - you could emboss the ornaments in a red sparkly embossing powder! It would look pretty awesome!

And here's a variation I created for a Yuletide Alcohol Ink Class that I taught last month:

Ornaments_2

Instructions:

  1. Fold a 210mm x 150mm piece of dark green cardstock in half to form a horizontally opening card.
  2. Apply Red Pepper, Meadow & Willow alcohol ink to the applicator felt in a linear fashion (lines or dots next to each other) Swipe ink tool left to right across gloss paper to create lines of colour. Swipe ink tool from top to bottom to create the plaid effect.
  3. Using Yuletide Vol 2 stamp set - stamp quote in bottom right corner with Olive ink. Stamp the two ornaments using Crimson ink. Alter their height to give the card variety.
  4. Adhere finished stamped piece to red cardstock, then to folded green card.

Thanks for dropping by each day! Has everyone finished all of their Christmas cards for this year? Do you make your cards each year? How many do you usually send out? I'd love to know!

Darkroom Door - Wednesday, December 09, 2009

If you've been using the Wordstrips for a while, you may have a bunch of words that have been left over from other projects. I keep all of mine in little zip lock bags so they don't get lost, and I have a separate bag for each different wordstrip so it's easy to find the right words for my projects.

Which brings me to todays project. I just finished making lots of Christmas cards using the Yuletide Vol1 wordstrip and I had a few words left over. So here's what I created:

Wordstrip_Tree

Supplies:
Darkroom Door Yuletide Vol 1 Wordstrip
Darkroom Door Yuletide Vol 1 stamp set (small star on top of tree)
Red & Brown cardstock

Instructions:

  1. Use words from the Yuletide Vol 1 wordstrip to create a tree and adhere to a folded red card.
  2. Cut a small piece of brown cardstock to add as the tree trunk.
  3. Stamp a small star from the Yuletide Vol 1 stamp set at the top of the tree using Brilliance Moonlight White ink.

How simple is that! So much fun though, the kids loved picking out the words for this one too. You could also create the same tree using the red Yuletide Vol 2 Wordstrip on a white card.

Until tomorrow.... Unlock the artist within!

Darkroom Door - Tuesday, December 08, 2009

It's Tuesday! That means there's a winner from the Christmas Creation Flickr Group challenge! But first.... I'm going to keep you in suspense as we need to give you a little more Christmas inspiration!

Check out this decoration created by Sarah Schwerin:

DDChrissyDeco4

Isn't it gorgeous! Sarah saw the original idea from a Martha Stewart Project Sheet "Glitter Star Ornaments' that she picked up in Spotlight. You can download the instruction sheet here.

Here's the details from Sarah's star:

Supplies:
* Darkroom Door Star Background Stamp
* Double sided cream basic grey patterned paper.
* Teal Stazon
* Silver Kindyglitz
* Metal bottle cap.
* Silver cord

Instructions:

  1. Cut fourteen 2x2" squares from double sided basic grey cardstock, and stamp each of them with the DD background stamp using Teal Stazon.
  2. Curl each twinchie into a cone shape and secure with adhesive. I used double sided tape down one side of the Twinchie which worked well because there was no drying time. For my decoration, I used 14 twinchies, but it will depend on how tight you roll them. You may need more or less - but always make sure you have an even number.
  3. Glue the cones to a 6cm circle base so that their tips all meet in the middle. Make sure you alternate their placement as per the photo.
  4. Flatten a metal bottle cap with a rubber mallet, and attach it using foam mounting tape to the centre of the ornament. Fill the inside with silver Kindyglitz.
  5. Apply silver Kindyglitz to the edges of each cone. Allow to dry.
  6. Punch a small hole in the top of the ornament, and thread through some silver cord and tie in a loop, ready to hang.
  7. Hang your ornament in your house, and listen to your family and friends ooooh and ahhh!

Finished ornament size = 6 inches wide.

SeasonsGreetings

Supplies:
Darkroom Door Yuletide Vol 2 Stamp set
Ranger Alcohol Inks: Meadow, Willow, Copper, Red Pepper
Ranger Archival Jet Black Inkpad
Green ribbon

Instructions:

  1. Fold a 210mm x 150mm piece of dark red cardstock in half to form a vertically opening card.
  2. Apply Meadow, Willow & Copper Alcohol Inks to the ink applicator felt. Apply a small squeeze of Blending Solution to the felt, and dab felt over white glossy cardstock. Rotate the applicator tool as you stamp to make the background more blended. Allow to dry. Adhere background to green cardstock
  3. Create alcohol ink background using the same technique with Red Pepper and Meadow inks. Stamp Seasons Greetings from Yuletide Vol 2 stamp set using Jet Black ink. Trim and mount onto green cardstock. Adhere over green alcohol ink background with foam adhesive.
  4. Create a bow with green grosgrain ribbon and wrap around the bottom of the card. Adhere panel to folded red card.

It's hard to see in this image, but the alcohol inks give the card such a great shimmer when you move it in the light - perfect for Christmas cards! I've made a few other cards with alcohol ink backgrounds that I'll share between now and Christmas too...

Remember the Flickr challenge!!! We'll be drawing a winner on Tuesday night our time (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time)!!! So hurry and upload a Christmas creation using any Darkroom Door product to the Flickr group to be in the draw :)

Darkroom Door - Sunday, December 06, 2009

Ohhh, I have some yummy goodness to share with you today. Melissa Phillips has created a couple of cards that are simply gorgeous... check these out (click on the cards for a larger view):

Melissa_Phillips_1

This card was created by stamping the Santa image from the Yuletide Vol 2 stamp set with red ink then embossing with clear embossing powder. She also used the Dot Background stamp and 'Yuletide' word from the Yuletide Vol 2 red wordstrip. I love the other details of ribbon, branches with red beads and the pine cones!

Here's another card:

Melissa_Phillips_2

Melissa stamped the Santa (Yuletide Vol 2 stamp set) in white ink then embossed in silver embossing powder. Doesn't it look fabulous!!! She also used the 'Magical' word from the Yuletide Vol 1 wordstrip. I love the bow on this card - and the snowflakes! Makes me wish we had some snow at this time of year!!!

Thanks for sharing them with us Melissa!

You can see the cards in more detail on her blog here too.

The Darkroom Door Flickr group has been active with lots of Christmas creations being added! Remember we draw the first winners on Tuesday, so be sure to upload your cards to the group to be in the draw!!!

Darkroom Door - Saturday, December 05, 2009

Here's a quick one for today...

Yuletide_Day5

Supplies:
Darkroom Door Star Background Stamp
Darkroom Door Yuletide Vol 1 Wordstrip
Darkroom Door Yuletide Montage
Twine
Red Cardstock
Brilliance Moonlight White Inkpad

Instructions:
1. Stamp Star Background onto red folded card with Brilliance Moonlight White inkpad.
2. Adhere strip of Yuletide Vol 2 Wordstrip down left hand side.
3. Trim image from Yuletide Montage and attach to the bottom right.
4. Wrap twine around the left side and tie in a bow.

This is one of those cards that can be 'easily' mass produced. I've just finished making about 200 of them!! I must admit, I was pretty glad when it was over, but I do love the simplicity of the design for this one. Imagine them done in any of the collection themes: Viva La Flora, Robots, Music... any of them could be replicated in this way!

See you again tomorrow.
